UC Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP)

Insurance Requirement

The University of California Regents mandate that all students be covered by a health insurance plan. All full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students are automatically enrolled in and charged for the University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) unless they choose to submit an online insurance waiver confirming they have acceptable health insurance coverage.

What is UC SHIP?

UC SHIP is an affordable health insurance plan tailored to the health care needs of UCSB students. The medical plan features year-round, worldwide coverage using the Anthem Blue Cross network, and includes prepaid access to care at the UCSB Student Health Center for illness or injury. To directly access the UC SHIP website please see http://ucop.edu/ucship. UC SHIP is a comprehensive insurance plan which has Medical, Vision, Dental, and Pharmacy.

Referrals are required for all appointments outside of SHS within 50 miles of UCSB.

After Hours Urgent Care

Please make an appointment at Student Health whenever possible. If care is needed outside Student Health's regular hours, you can call our After Hours Nurseline at 877-351-3457. A list of Urgent Care Centers can be found by clicking the following link: Urgent Care Centers

24 Hour Telemedicine Care

UC SHIP students can connect with a licensed medical doctor, dermatologist or therapist by mobile app, web, or phone using the LiveHealth Online service; no referral is needed. The regular co-pays of $25 for medical visits and $15 for behavioral health visits will apply.

Therapist video appointments are available from 7am to 9pm, seven days a week, and can be scheduled with the same clinician for recurring appointments.

Emergency Care

Go to an emergency facility for treatment. You do not need a referral from a Student Health Services (SHS) provider to receive emergency services. Payment of ER claims is subject to review by Anthem Blue Cross. Must meet “emergency” definition according to the UC SHIP Medical Benefits Booklet. *NOTE* - The Emergency Room Providers at Cottage Hospital are considered "out-of-network" when claims are billed to Anthem Blue Cross for payment review. If you having difficulties with payments due to Cottage Hospital, contact the SHS Insurance office at SHS Insurance Office.

UC SHIP's enrollment vendor, USI Insurance Services (formerly Wells Fargo Insurance Services), will mail form 1095-B verifying you were enrolled in a healthcare plan in 2018 that qualifies as
Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) as required by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The form is provided to you as proof that you meet the ACA’s “individual mandate” and should not be subject to healthcare tax penalties. See the 1095-B FAQ which may answer questions you have about this form. You may also contact USI Insurance Services at (800) 853-5899 Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT for any questions.

If you move, notify the UCSB Registrar’s Office of your current address to ensure you receive the form and other important healthcare insurance information.
