All registered UC students are required to have major medical health insurance while attending school. Student Health Directors and University administrators determined that the best way to ensure that all students have health insurance was to implement a process through which all students would be covered by campus-sponsored plans unless they could demonstrate comparable private health insurance. Waiver request forms must be submitted to Student Health each year prior to the posted deadlines. Once a waiver has been accepted, it is good for the rest of the year (through the following September.)
Both of the Student Health Insurance Plans (SHIP), undergraduate and graduate, are overseen by committees of interested students and departmental representatives who discuss plan design in consultation with the Student Health Director. The committees regularly evaluate usage patterns to determine need for future plan modifications.
As a result of these committees' work, an excellent benefits package has been developed. Both SHIP plans provide a complete health care package when combined with the services available through Student Health. One of the outstanding features of these plans is their portability, meaning excellent coverage for students whether they are on campus, at home, or traveling.
All students are required to have insurance that is comparable to the SHIP program. This means that the student must be able to obtain primary care services within 25 miles of Student Health and that the services include physician/primary care visits, specialty visits, outpatient diagnostic testing (MRI, ultrasound, etc.), emergency care, and non-parity mental health benefits. Please note that the nearest Kaiser facility is more than 25 miles away and students with Kaiser plans will not be allowed to waive out of SHIP. High deductible plans, even those associated with health or medical savings accounts are not allowed.
The following standards are used to assess for comparability:
- annual stop loss/total out-of-pocket expense - $5,000 or less
- annual deductible - $1,000 or less
- lifetime maximum benefit - at least $300,000
- pharmacy benefits available
- mental health benefits available
No International Insurance, Medical nor Medicare plans are eligible to Waive. Do not submit request if you have one of these insurance plans, as they are not adequate.
