International Students

Many companies not affiliated with UCSB or the University of California or the Regents of the University of California offer health insurance products to international J1 and F1 students marketed as a UCSB compliant health insurance plan. Please be aware that the University of California has strict waiver guidelines that must be met in order to waive (opt-out) the UCSB Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Review the University of California waiver criteria if you plan on purchasing a medical plan to waive SHIP. All of the criteria must be met without exception. Although we would prefer that you stay enrolled in SHIP, you do have the option to purchase an outside plan and submit a waiver request by the deadlines listed at the bottom of this page.

Below are a list of commonly submitted plans that are known to be compliant with the UC Waiver guidelines as of June 11, 2019:
Student Medicover Prime
Student Medicover Elite
ISO Share
ISO Care

Common plans known to be out of compliance and denied:
ISO J1 Exchange
ISO J1 Exchange Superior
Student Medicover Preferred
Student Medicover Basic
Travel policies without prescription drug benefits, mental health coverage, and/or has a per medical or mental health/substance abuse dollar maximum limit.
