Dear UC SHIP Enrolled Student:

After careful consideration, we made the decision to close the SHS Dental Care Center effective June 30, 2022. I want to express my deep appreciation to all the dental staff for their dedication to our students and to the UC Santa Barbara community over the years.

UC SHIP enrollees are maintaining their full insurance benefits through Delta Dental and are eligible to visit any dentist accepting new patients.  There is no benefit change for UC SHIP enrollees.  You can locate dental practices near you by visiting the Delta Dental website.  Select “Delta Dental PPO” to obtain the greatest benefit value.  We regret any inconvenience to students seeking dental care caused by this change.

To mitigate any inconvenience, we have arranged for priority appointments with a dentist whose office is one mile from the UCSB campus, and Student Health will assist with transportation. Beginning July 1, 2022 and going through the summer quarter, Dr. Aryan Mazloom has agreed to set aside appointment slots for our UCSB students every day Monday through Friday at his private practice office Goleta Dental Practice located at 5370 Hollister Ave. Suite A Santa Barbara, CA 93111. Please call his office at 805-683-7777 to schedule an appointment.  We will pay directly (no reimbursement required) for transportation through a shared ride to a dentist within five miles of campus, which can be arranged by emailing shs.dental@sa.ucsb.edu

UC SHIP is a comprehensive insurance plan which includes medical, vision, dental, and pharmacy coverage tailored to the health care needs of UCSB students.  The medical plan features year-round, worldwide coverage using the Anthem Blue Cross network, and includes
prepaid access to care at the UCSB Student Health Center for illness or injury. Your benefits are not limited to services provided at Student Health Service.  You can utilize your insurance plan off campus; see the plan documents for coverage specifics and to find contracted providers near you.

I know change can be disruptive. Our goal in moving in this direction, however, is to continue to grow SHS while maintaining the high level of service and healthcare that our students and community have come to expect and deserve.

On behalf of the SHS team, we wish you a good summer and we look forward to supporting you and your best health in the years to come.

Best regards,

Vejas Skripkus, M.D., M.H.A.

Dental Clinic Closure – Frequently Asked Questions

The decision to close the dental care center was not an easy decision to make. As the Executive Director and Campus Physician, Dr. Skripkus came to the decision to close the Dental Care Center based on a variety of interdependent factors and the need to focus future investments in SHS on heavily utilized services that more students access, such as gynecology, reproductive health care, medication abortion services, medical primary care services, sports medicine, nursing triage, mental health care, pharmacy, and a Patient Experience Department to assist students in accessing healthcare. Every department at UCSB's Student Health Service continuously undergoes evaluation regarding their utilization, financial sustainability, services offered, and strategic planning.

We want to reassure everyone that students with UC SHIP Delta Dental coverage will not see any change to their benefits and coverage as a result of this closure. Dental coverage premiums are consistent throughout the UC system (including the majority of campuses where
there is no on-campus dental clinic) and co-pays are the same at all plan-approved dental providers. Students with UC SHIP will continue to be eligible for 2 cleanings with 2 exams and one set of x-rays at no charge (per plan year), and to receive other dental services at negotiated (discounted) rates.

previously visiting the UCSB Dental Clinic?
While we are discontinuing on-campus dental services, students will have access to more than 10 dental practices currently accepting new patients within a five-mile radius of campus that accept our UC SHIP insurance. Dental providers can be found by searching the Delta Dental Provider look up. Volume in our dental clinic had been very limited for the last several months (the clinic is operating two days per week until its closure), so we do not expect the transition to overwhelm the community’s dental services.

If you have need for your dental records including x-rays from the Dental Care Center please contact our office via medical records release and we will be happy to provide these to you at no charge.

The Dental Care Center only accepts UC SHIP insurance, which has historically been used by fewer than 50% of UCSB students. Importantly, our lowest-income students qualify for Medi-Cal and can waive out of UC SHIP. Those students have not been able to use our Dental Care Center and have already been seeing community dentists.

SHS is an outpatient health center that is not an emergency or after-hours provider. Dental emergencies will continue to be addressed to a similar extent as medical emergencies at SHS through primary care services. Primary care providers have the same ability to address pain management concerns as do dentists and can stabilize an injury and coordinate transportation of the patient to the local Emergency Department for higher level care with an oral-maxillofacial surgeon if needed.

Yes, if you are having trouble with transportation to your dental appointment please email shs.dental@sa.ucsb.edu and we will work with getting you transportation to the dentist via a shared ride.

Is there funding that went to the Dental Clinic that is now being redirected to other services? No. The dental clinic has operated on income earned through service fees. Each student visit was billed to UC SHIP and the dental clinic was paid directly by the insurance company. We do anticipate reduced financial risk as a result of this closure because we will avoid situations where other funding needs to be redirected to cover financial deficits in years when the cost of our dental clinic operation exceeds its income.

Beginning July 1st and going through the summer months, our contracted dentist Dr.
