Why did I get charged for a "health insurance fee" on my BARC statement? I didn't ask for health insurance.
As approved by a vote of UCSB students, and ratified by the UC Regents, it is an enrollment policy that all students must be covered by major medical health insurance while attending UCSB. All students are automatically enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) and charged a health insurance premium (SHIP fee) as part of their registration fees.
What do I do if I already have health insurance and I don't need the insurance offered by UCSB?
If you have other major medical health insurance comparable to UC SHIP and don't wish to have the advantages of dual coverage, then you can submit an
On-line Waiver to discontinue your enrollment in SHIP and if approved, the insurance charge will be reversed in your account.
How do I apply for a waiver?
An
On-line Waiver is available for UCSB students. To complete the form, you will need the details about your health insurance plan, including the company name and phone number, group number, the student's policy identification number, and the subscriber name and ID number. You will receive a confirmation number upon completion of the form. Print this page for your records.
What are the deadlines for submitting a waiver?
Fall: Fall waiver deadline is September 1, 2012.
For more information, please call the Insurance Office at (805) 893-2592 or email your questions to SHSinsurance@sa.ucsb.edu
What options do I have if my waiver is denied?
Waivers can be denied for several reasons:
- The waiver form was not completed correctly.
- Your non-SHIP insurance does not meet the required minimum health insurance benefit levels established by UCSB.
- Your waiver form was submitted after the deadline.
- You have not activated our Umail account. Please do so and resubmit your waiver request in one week.
You will receive a letter or email indicating the reason for denial. Waivers that were not completed correctly may be resubmitted with the requested corrections. The decision to deny waivers submitted after the deadline is final, and you will be automatically enrolled in UC SHIP. An appeal may be submitted if you have an unusual situation which you feel needs to be addressed.
I submitted a waiver but it hasn't appeared on my BA/RC statement.
If you submit your waiver form by the September 1 deadline, the SHIP fee will not appear on your first BARC statement of the Fall quarter. If you submitted your waiver form after September 1 but before the end of the third week of classes, you will see a credit for the SHIP fee on the October or November BARC statement. However, there will be a late waiver fee of $50.00 applied to your account that you must pay. Please wait until you have received this BARC statement before calling the Student Health Insurance Office about your waiver.
Do I have to submit a separate waiver every quarter?
Academic-year waivers submitted at the beginning of a quarter remain in effect for the rest of the school year. You need only submit
