Confidentiality of student medical records
Medical records of students at UCSB, including information about medical treatment & diagnosis, are treated with strict confidentiality. They cannot be released to anyone, including school officials or parents, without the student's consent. This can be difficult for patents to accept when so recently at home they were managing their student's needs, and previously were involved in their medical visits. We encourage all students to communicate with their patents about their healthcare, and we may ask the student to call you if serious health concerns arise.
If you and your student wish to have the clinicians at Student Health talk directly with a parent or another person, your student must sign a release specifying whom they are authorizing to receive which kind of medical information. Instructions for completing this form are available on our website under Quick Links, or students may come into the lobby at Student Health to complete and turn in the authorization.
If parents have serious concerns about their students that they feel should be communicated to the campus, they may contact UCSB's Coordinator of Student Mental Health Services, Angela Andrade, at 805-893-8920. This service is part of the Student Affairs Office of Student Life, and a readily accessible single point of contact for parents, faculty , staff, and students who are concerned about a distressed student. They can discuss concerns, provide referrals to campus departments, develop action plans, and follow up with parents, students, staff, and faculty as appropriate. For further information go to http://www.sa.ucsb.edu/distressedstudentsguide/
Students who have questions about their healthcare can contact our Student Health clinicians and Advice Nurses directly through confidential email on our secure browser located on our hompage in the top left hand corner called Gateway. We are always eager to receive feedback on the services we provide at http://studenthealth.sa.ucsb.edu/contactus.aspx.
