Trichomoniasis or trich is a vaginal infection caused by a parasite that is not
normally present. It is most likely transmitted sexually and by skin to skin contact,
but can also be passed on through moist objects including towels, washcloths, bathing
suits and sexual objects.
Symptoms
- A moderate to heavy thin, foamy discharge that may be yellowish-green
- Unpleasant, offensive odor associated with the discharge
- Painful/frequent urination; burning sensation
- Painful intercourse
- Itching, swelling and redness in or around the genital area
- May occur 4-20 days following sex with an infected partner
- May not have symptoms
- Men are usually asymptomatic
Treatment
A prescription for antimicrobial pills or gel will be prescribed by your health
care provider for you and your partner, so that you don't re-infect each other.
Do not have sex until you both finish treatment.
Staying Healthy
- If you are sexually active, always use a condom!
- Wear clean, dry underwear. Some
infections thrive in hot, moist environments, especially
created by nylon underwear, tight jeans, wet bathing suits, and panty hose.
- Avoid douching and perfumed feminine products.
- Wipe your vagina and anus from front to back to avoid spreading bacteria.
- If you suspect a vaginal infection, see a doctor immediately and abstain from sex
until the problem is diagnosed and treated.
