Sunburn

What is sunburn?

Redness and heat from skin that has been over-exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays. The burn may be first or second degree.

How is it treated?

Cool compresses and baths. Don't rub area. Apply moisturizing cream if desired. If burned over a large area or severely burned, seek medical care. If dizziness, abdominal cramps, or infection occur, or pain persists, see your health care provider.

How is it prevented?

Limit sun exposure to 15-20 minutes a day. Use sunscreen with SPF factor of 8 or above. Remember, degree of "tanness" is a genetic factor and TAN does not equal HEALTHY SKIN.  See our quick tips on sunscreen for more info.
