When are the DEADLINES TO SATISFY HEP B REQUIREMENT?
- In order to satisfy the Hep B requirement, you must go to the admissions website where you'll find a checklist of 10 items. Click on the Hepatitis B button and answer the questions.
- If you have not received all 3 shots, you must follow the accelerated schedule and complete the shots by Spring Quarter. Registration for Spring Quarter begins the first part of February. If you have not provided proof of completion of the series prior to Spring registration, a hard block will be placed on your registration. Hard blocks prevent you from registering for any classes.
Which immunizations are required/recommended?
- Hepatitis B - required all students who will be 18 years of age or younger by the first day of classes are required by California state law to provide proof of immunity to the Hepatitis B virus prior to enrollment.

When are you open?

Student Health hours are typically: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 8:00am-4:30pm, Wednesday 9:00am-4:30pm, Thursdays 5:00am-7:00pm (by appointment only) with limited services from 12 noon-1:00pm. Please check our calendar for special hours of operation.
What does UCSB Student Health Service do?
- Student Health provides high quality, accessible primary health care and health education to the UCSB campus community. We specialize in personalized health care by clinicians and educators, paying close attention to physical, psychological and preventive aspects of each clinical visit. We are able to treat the vast majority of physical conditions on an ambulatory basis. Our close liaisons with specialists and emergency services in the community are utilized when necessary.
what Clinical Services do you provide?
- Advice Nurse
The Advice Nurse is a practitioner who can assess the medical condition and advise whether or not medical service is needed. She is available in person, by phone or email. The Advice Nurse can also direct the patient to the appropriate clinic and make an appointment when necessary.
General Medicine
- Acne Treatment
Appointment based - if acne does not respond to traditional treatment, accutane therapy is available. - Immunization Clinic
Go to the check-in station in the main lobby for instructions for all immunizations other than for travel. - Minor Surgery
Appointment based - removal of moles, skin tags, ingrown toenails, "bumps". - Nutrition
Appointment based - registered dietitians providing nutritional information and guidance for needs such as weight loss/gain, high cholesterol, diabetes, high blood pressure, eating disorders, and sports nutrition. - Social Worker
Appointment based - students identify factors that are obstacles to their success & develop a plan to access resources. - Travel Clinic
Appointment based - personalized - Wart treatment
Appointment based - non-genital or plantar warts. Assessment and removal of warts on the body.

Primary Care
- Appointments
Appointment based - appointments made in advance for medical problems that are not urgent (eg., follow-up checks, long term conditions, symptoms that come and go, multiple vague symptoms, physical exams for work/school, acne.) - Same Day
Appointment based - made on the day the patient comes in depending on appointment availability. These appointments are for any medical problem that needs to be seen that day but is not a medical emergency (i.e., sever sore throat, sinus infection, earache, etc.) - Urgent Care
No appointment necessary - waiting times vary. Medical problems that need immediate attention (i.e., bike accident, severe headache, high fever, pain, cuts that need stitches, shortness of breath, etc.)
- Urgent Care - What to Expect
If you have an urgent problem and need to be seen immediately:
1. Go to the Appointment Desk in the lobby, where your eligibility for services will be verified. You will be scheduled into an appointment for the same day if one is available. If there are no available appointments, you will be given an "Urgent Care" pass and instructed to go to its location, present the pass and check in.
2. At that time, your medical needs will be assessed. Waiting times vary depending on the severity of your problem.

- Dermatology
Appointment based - By referral only. - Orthopedics
Appointment based - medical problems that affect bones and joints such as sprains, broken bones plus surgery follow-ups. - Psychiatry
Appointment based - therapy, monitoring of medications - By referral only.
Women's Health
- Appointment based - examinations for: infection or pain in the pelvic/lower abdominal area, "annual exam," breast lumps, birth control consultation, etc.
Auxiliary Services
- Dental Care
Appointment based - fee-for-service; complete general dentistry (i.e. cleanings, exams by dentist, fillings). - Eye Care
Appointment based - fee-for-service; complete vision care (i.e. corrective lenses, frames, contacts, etc.) - Laboratory
Processing fee charged per day (not per test); most tests are analyzed in-house however, some tests are sent to a reference lab. - Pharmacy
Prescription and over-the-counter medications. - Physical Therapy
Appointment based - physician referral required; rehabilitation after injury or surgery. - X-Ray

Where Should I Park When I Come to Student Health?
- If you are riding your bike:
There are several bike racks near the Isla Vista entrance of Student Health Service. If you follow the bike path near the Events Center (Thunderdome) and underneath the overpass, at the top of the hill you will find bicycle parking on your right-hand side. - If you are driving:
Student Health has a parking lot which is accessible from El Colegio Road. Be sure to obtain a parking pass from the permit dispenser in the lot, and display the permit in your front windshield.
If you will be here for a short time, Student Health has a few metered parking places in front of the building, on El Colegio Road- just before you get to the stoplight at Ocean Road. You will see the gold statue on your right-hand side.
Lot 27 is just across the street from Student Health. If you park here, be sure to obtain a parking permit.
Can I have my Insurance Fee Waived?
- Health Insurance is mandatory for all undergraduate students at UCSB. You will automatically be enrolled in UC SHIP unless you waive out. The plan year dates are September through September, with premiums paid three times a year.

Is Student Health Insurance Plan Better than my Private Insurance?
- The Student Health Service Administrators have worked hard to put together an insurance plan that is convenient and comprehensive. Student Health's central location makes it an opportune place for students to receive high quality health care, and having Student Health Insurance makes it all the more convenient.

WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF A STUDENT?
- A "student" is an individual for who the University maintains student records and who: (a) is enrolled in or registered with an academic program of the University; (b) has completed the immediately preceding term, is not presently enrolled, and is eligible for re-enrollment; or (c) is on an approved educational leave or other approved leave status, or is on filing-fee status.
